Your eyes don't deceive you - this is actually a 21" shell! Where most gong drums with oversized heads go an even 2" smaller than the head size, DW have coopted the use of their bass drum hoop forms (technically 20.75" diameter) to make their gong drums just 1" smaller than the normal 22" bass drum head.

The result has all the timpanic tone of the oversized head, but has a slightly lower pitch than a 20" shell would have, which results in a huge earth-shattering kaboom. This thing sounds incredible.

Very clean. Hard to find a scratch anywhere on the drum, though obviously the head has been played.
