Craviotto might be the most famous name in steambent drum shells these days, and though Johnny himself has passed on, Steve Maxwell and Saul Rocha and the rest of the crew in Nashville are producing absolutely stunning drums exactly how Johnny did - with the fewest pieces of wood possible!
The Craviotto construction starts with one plank of wood, which enters a metal chamber filled with steam until it becomes flexible, then is removed and placed into a cylindrical form to make a drum shell. It is then fit with similarly solid top and bottom reinforcement rings. So the shell is one continuous piece from top to bottom, and three total pieces. The end result is an incredibly sensitive drum with a limitless dynamic range!
This particular drum represents what we consider to be the classic Craviotto shell - solid maple with solid maple reinforcement rings. That's the shell that took off in the 90s when he made shells for that big California company.
But that's not quite the end of it - this maple is beautifully figured. Guitar makers might call it flamed maple. Craviotto just call it curly. We know it's gorgeous - just look at the photos! And the ebonized green stain just makes it look even better!
The sound is warm and balanced, and dynamics are sensitive and articulate, while still providing a big, satisfying rimshot. A Craviotto maple might be the last snare drum you'll ever need!
