Craviotto might be the most famous name in steambent drum shells these days, and though Johnny himself has passed on, Steve Maxwell and Sam Bacco and the rest of the crew in Nashville are producing absolutely stunning drums exactly how Johnny did - with the fewest pieces of wood possible!
This particular Craviotto features a solid cherry shell, made in the typical Craviotto way - it starts with one plank of wood, which enters a metal tube filled with steam until it becomes flexible, then is removed and placed into a cylindrical form to make a drum shell. It is then fit with top and bottom reinforcement rings, also made of solid cherry. So the shell is one continuous piece from top to bottom, and three total pieces. The end result is an incredibly sensitive drum with a limitless dynamic range and a sound that has both a strong attack and a full-bodied sound.
Cherry has a stronger attack than maple, and a little more low end as well; it has a wider sonic spectrum than maple. This drum is infinitely sensitive and produces a fantastic crack with rimshot backbeats, with a tone that is never, ever harsh.
We received two similar cherry snares, and this one is a lighter-tinted piece of cherry wood finished in a natural satin oil.
