Craviotto might be the most famous name in steambent drum shells these days, and though Johnny himself has passed on, Steve Maxwell and Sam Bacco and the rest of the crew in Nashville are producing absolutely stunning drums exactly how Johnny did - with the fewest pieces of wood possible!

This particular Craviotto features a solid ash shell, made in the typical Craviotto way - it starts with one plank of wood, which enters a metal tube filled with steam until it becomes flexible, then is removed and placed into a cylindrical form to make a drum shell. It is then fit with top and bottom reinforcement rings, also made of solid ash. So the shell is one continuous piece from top to bottom, and three total pieces. The end result is an incredibly sensitive drum with a limitless dynamic range and a sound that has both a strong attack and a full-bodied sound.

Ash gives this drum a little extra bark; a stronger attack than, say, maple. Ghost notes are outstandingly clear and backbeats will cut through anything you can throw at it, but this particular drum's set of 8 (down from the normal 10) single-point lugs put less mass on the shell, and this drum is effortlessly open and resonant.
