Want a classic Ludwig kit in classic useful sizes without completely ruining yourself financially? Look no further, for we have brought unto this gorgeous Standard kit in Blue Strata, in Downbeat sizes?
The Ludwig Standard series were introduced in 1968 as a lower-cost kit meant to compete with recently-arrived Japanese-made kits. Standard drums were made with factory-second shells made of the same materials as Ludwig's flagship kits, but featured shell hardware that cost less to make, and slightly thinner wraps in 15 vibrant finishes unique to the Standard line.
This kit features mahogany-poplar-maple shells with solid maple reinforcement rings and Granitone interior finish, which means that these were most likely made in the early 70s.
You could call this a Downbeat configuration: 20x14 kick drum, 12x8 rack tom, and 14x14 floor tom. The 14" floor tom and 20" kick are both extremely rare! The kick has been fit with a single cymbal arm and a center-position rail consolette mount for the 12" tom that works equally well for right- and left-handed setups.
The finish on the kit is one of the least faded Standard wraps we've seen, however, it is clear that these drums were kept in a hot, dry environment: the finish exhibits a lot of cracking, though it does not seem to be loose. There is some splitting at the seam on the floor tom, and a couple chunks missing near the seam on the bass drum as well. Please see pictures.
