It's the 50th Anniversary of Ludwig's introduction of the Vistalite line of acrylic-shelled drum kits!
Let's take a trip back to 1972: Richard Nixon is president, which means that the Vietnam conflict is still in full swing. Don McLean's American Pie is at the top of the charts. Plaid-patterned polyster clothing is all the rage in the day's fashion.
And Ludwig have just unleashed the Vistalites upon the world. Originally offered in clear, blue, green, red, amber, and yellow, these drums were not the very first acrylic drums, but they were far and away the most colorful. Four years later in 1976, Ludwig introduced 'rainbow' Vistalites featuring shells made of multiple colors of acrylic in various patterns and color combinations.
For the 50th Anniversary, Ludwig have made 50 snares each of five long-discontinued rainbow shell configurations.
This shell is what Ludwig call Pattern A: a three-band shell consisting of black sparkle, smoke, and black sparkle acrylic.
